Do you know the five major characteristics of injection molds?

1. The cavity and core present a three-dimensional surface.


The external and internal shapes of plastic parts are directly molded by the mold cavity and core. The processing of these complex three-dimensional surfaces is relatively difficult, especially for the processing of blind hole-type internal molding surfaces in the mold cavity. If traditional processing methods are used, not only does it require highly skilled workers, numerous auxiliary fixtures and tools, but also results in a long processing cycle.


2. Specialized division of labor, dynamic combination.


Mold production typically involves small batches and is often a one-off process. However, molds require numerous standard components, ranging from large mold bases to small ejector pins, which cannot and do not belong to a single manufacturer. Additionally, the manufacturing process is complex, and the use of ordinary equipment and CNC equipment is extremely uneven.


3. High requirements for precision and surface quality, as well as long service life.


Currently, the dimensional accuracy requirements for general plastic parts are IT6-7, with a surface roughness of Ra0.2-0.1μm. Correspondingly, the dimensional accuracy of injection mold components needs to reach IT5-6, and the surface roughness should be below Ra0.1μm. The roughness of the recording surface of the laser disc needs to reach 0.02-0.01μm, which is comparable to the level of mirror processing, requiring the surface roughness of the mold to be below 0.01μm. Long-life injection molds are essential for improving efficiency and reducing costs. Currently, the service life of injection molds is generally required to be over 1 million cycles. Precision injection molds require mold frames with high stiffness, increased thickness of the mold plate, and additional support columns or conical positioning elements to prevent deformation of the mold under pressure, with internal pressure sometimes reaching 100MPa. The ejection device is an important factor affecting product deformation and dimensional accuracy, so the optimal ejection point should be selected to ensure uniform demolding at all locations. Most high-precision injection molds adopt a mosaic or fully assembled structure, which requires significant improvements in the machining accuracy and interchangeability of mold components.?


4. Design and manufacturing in different locations.


Mold manufacturing is not the end goal. Instead, it is the user who proposes the final product design. The mold manufacturer designs and manufactures molds based on the user's requirements. In most cases, the injection production of the product is also carried out by other manufacturers. This results in the situation where product design, mold design and manufacturing, and product production are carried out in different locations.?


5. Long process flow and tight manufacturing schedule


Mold expert Luo Baihui believes that for injection molded parts, most of them are used to form complete products in conjunction with other components. In many cases, other parts have already been completed and are eagerly awaiting the injection molded parts for their launch. Due to the high requirements for the shape or dimensional accuracy of the products, coupled with the varying characteristics of resin materials, after the mold is manufactured, it requires repeated mold testing and correction, making the development and delivery time very tight.
